SIP Calculator — Calculate Returns on Monthly Mutual Fund Investments

Free online SIP Calculator to estimate returns on your monthly Systematic Investment Plan. Calculate wealth gained, invested amount & total maturity value with compound interest formula.

What is a SIP Calculator?

A SIP Calculator is an online financial tool that helps you estimate the future value of your monthly Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) investments in mutual funds. By entering your monthly investment amount, expected annual return rate, and investment tenure, the calculator instantly computes the total maturity value, wealth gained, and provides a clear breakdown of your investment growth.

Our SIP return calculator uses the compound interest formula for periodic investments — the same formula used by AMCs (Asset Management Companies) and SEBI-regulated platforms. It provides accurate projections to help you plan your mutual fund investments and set realistic financial goals.

How to Use the SIP Calculator

1

Enter Monthly Investment Amount

Input the amount you plan to invest every month via SIP. You can use the preset buttons (₹500, ₹1,000, ₹5,000, ₹10,000) or enter a custom amount starting from ₹500.

2

Set Expected Annual Return Rate

Enter the expected annual return percentage. Historically, equity mutual funds in India have returned 10-15% annually over the long term. You can also select a specific mutual fund to auto-fill its historical return rate.

3

Choose Investment Duration

Select how many years you plan to stay invested. Longer durations benefit more from compounding. We recommend a minimum of 5 years for equity SIPs.

4

View Results Instantly

The calculator instantly shows your total invested amount, estimated returns (wealth gain), and total maturity value. The donut chart and year-by-year breakdown give you a clear picture of your investment growth.

SIP Return Formula

The SIP calculator uses the future value of annuity due formula for compound interest applied to periodic payments:

M = P × [({(1 + i)^n - 1} / i)] × (1 + i)
M= Maturity amount (total value on maturity)
P= Monthly SIP investment amount
i= Periodic rate of interest (Annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
n= Total number of monthly installments (Years × 12)

Worked Example — ₹10,000 Monthly SIP

Let us calculate the maturity amount for a monthly SIP of ₹10,000 at 12% annual return for 10 years:

Monthly investment (P): ₹10,000
Annual return rate: 12%
Periodic rate (i): 12 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.01
Total months (n): 10 × 12 = 120
M = 10,000 × [{(1.01)^120 - 1} / 0.01] × 1.01
M = 10,000 × [3.30 - 1] / 0.01 × 1.01
M = 10,000 × 230.04 × 1.01
M ≈ ₹23,23,391
Total Invested
₹12,00,000
Wealth Gain
₹11,23,391
Total Value
₹23,23,391

Benefits of SIP Investment

Rupee Cost Averaging

Automatically buys more units when market prices drop and fewer when prices rise, averaging out your cost per unit over time.

Power of Compounding

Returns earned on your investments are reinvested, creating exponential wealth growth over long periods. The longer you stay invested, the greater the compounding effect.

No Market Timing Needed

SIP eliminates the need to predict market movements. Regular investing through SIP ensures you benefit from both market highs and lows.

Flexibility & Convenience

Start with as little as ₹100/month. Increase, decrease, pause, or stop your SIP anytime without any penalty. Auto-debit ensures you never miss an installment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP)?
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is an investment method offered by mutual fund companies where you invest a fixed amount regularly (monthly, quarterly) into a chosen fund. SIP uses rupee cost averaging and compounding to build wealth over time without needing to time the market.
How is SIP return calculated?
SIP returns are calculated using the future value of annuity formula: M = P × [({(1 + i)^n - 1} / i)] × (1 + i), where P is the monthly investment amount, i is the periodic interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), and n is the total number of monthly installments.
What is the minimum amount to start a SIP?
The minimum SIP amount varies by mutual fund scheme. Most funds allow you to start a SIP with as little as ₹100 or ₹500 per month. Some funds may require a minimum of ₹1,000. Check with your specific fund house for exact requirements.
What is a good return rate for SIP in mutual funds?
Historically, equity mutual funds in India have delivered 12-15% annualized returns over the long term (10+ years). Large-cap funds typically return 10-12%, mid-cap funds 12-18%, and small-cap funds 15-25% over extended periods. However, past performance does not guarantee future returns.
SIP vs Lumpsum investment — which is better?
SIP is better for most investors as it averages out market volatility through rupee cost averaging, requires less capital upfront, and enforces disciplined investing. Lumpsum may yield higher returns in continuously rising markets but carries higher timing risk. For long-term wealth creation, SIP is generally recommended.
Can I stop or pause my SIP?
Yes, you can stop or pause your SIP at any time without any penalty. Most fund houses and platforms allow you to pause SIP for 1-3 months, skip installments, or permanently stop the SIP. Your existing investments will continue to remain invested and earn returns.
How does rupee cost averaging work in SIP?
Rupee cost averaging means your fixed SIP amount buys more units when markets are low and fewer units when markets are high. Over time, this averages out the cost per unit, reducing the impact of market volatility on your overall investment returns.
What is the power of compounding in SIP?
Compounding in SIP means you earn returns not just on your invested amount but also on previously earned returns. Over long periods, this creates exponential wealth growth. For example, ₹10,000/month at 12% for 20 years grows to ₹99.91 lakhs, where ₹75.91 lakhs is pure returns from compounding.

SIP Investment Tips

  • 1Start Early: The earlier you start, the more time compounding has to work. Even a 5-year delay can reduce your final corpus by 40-50%.
  • 2Increase SIP Annually: Use Step-Up SIP to increase your SIP amount by 10-15% each year as your income grows. This can double your corpus compared to a regular SIP.
  • 3Stay Invested Long-Term: SIP works best over 7+ years. Avoid stopping during market downturns — those are the months your SIP buys more units at lower prices.
  • 4Diversify Across Categories: Spread your SIP across large-cap, mid-cap, and flexi-cap funds to balance risk and returns across market cycles.
